Carol Handyside
A passionate, conscientious and committed mathematics teacher for 18 years, I have an in-depth knowledge of the mathematics curriculum from early years to GCSE. I hold qualified teacher status, (QTS) a postgraduate certificate in Dyscalculia and am a BDA Accredited Teacher, Dyscalculia (ATD). My greatest strength is the ability to diagnose difficulties in mathematics, maximise understanding, confidence and enjoyment and draw on pupils’ strengths to maximise success in the subject. I tailor my lessons to suit the individual needs of my learners. I use a multisensory approach to maximise understanding and ensure lessons are meaningful and impactful. I use metacognition to aid learners to make sense of the mathematics and develop an awareness of their unique learning style. I offer face to face tuition at my home in the Guildford/ Farnborough/ Woking area or online tuition.
I am an NCETM Accredited Professional Development Lead and the Director of Spot On With Numbers (www.spotonwithnumbers.co.uk). Spot On is a concrete and pictorial resource designed to aid learners in the development of number sense. Although I do offer training and guidance in the use of Spot On resources, I am also available for Professional Development training on the use of other resources (Tens Frames, Hungarian Number Frames, Cuisenaire Rods, Algebra Tiles, Bar Modelling, Directed Counters etc). I also offer training on Dyscalculia awareness and strategies to support mathematics learning at school and at home.
